Sargento recalls products due to possible listeria contamination

The products are believed to have been packaged between Monday and Thursday of last week, as the issue was first discovered on Friday when Taylor Farms received a notice from [cheese company] Sargento Foods, Inc, who supplies Taylor Farms with Bevel Shred Pepperjack cheese products.

Listeriosis is a serious infection that's usually caused by eating contaminated food and can be particularly unsafe for pregnant women and older people. According to the CDC, about 260 people die of listeriosis every year.

In response to the possible contamination, Sargento has announced which types of cheese are affected by the recall, with their UPCs and Sell By dates included.

The supplier of Sargento's specialty longhorn Colby says the product could be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes. The company said it was recalling five additional products packaged at that same facility "out of an abundance of caution".

According to a product recall notice posted online by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Meijer Brand Colby Cheese and Colby Jack Cheese were sold in Meijer stores from November 10, 2016 to February 9, 2017. Cheese lovers should throw out: Sliced Colby-Jack Cheese, Sliced Pepper Jack Cheese, Chef Blends Shredded Taco Cheese, Off The Block Shredded Fine Cut Colby-Jack Cheese and Off The Block Shredded Fine Cut Cheddar Jack Cheese.

Fortunately, no such illnesses have been reported as of the time of this publication.

The cheese is in plastic deli packing with UPC's starting with 215927 or 215938 followed by six digits based on weight.
