"Where you live matters to your health", said Jerry Spegman, a member of the community coaching team at County Health Rankings & Roadmaps, a collaboration of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute. While Douglas County scored well in other social and economic factors, among them education levels and employment rates, the county also reported a fairly wide gap between its highest and lowest earners.

In a ranking of West Virginia's 55 counties, Harrison County has moved from 31st up to 26th in health outcomes. In Collier County, Florida, the premature mortality rate - people dying of largely preventable causes before age 75 - is 216 deaths per 100,000 residents.

The city's rate of premature deaths, violent crime and air pollution have improved over the past 10 years. Douglas County ranked No.17, down six spots from a year ago.

According to the 2017 rankings, the five healthiest counties in NY state are, in order, Saratoga, Rockland, Nassau, Westchester and Putnam. It highlights key health factors that affect health, including health behaviors, access to and quality of clinical care, social and economic factors, and physical environment.

The lower Hudson counties illustrate that often there is a fairly narrow gap between outcomes and the factors that lead to those results. However, the consecutive ranking has brought awareness to those partaking in county government.

Just less than 30 percent of kids in Fayette and Raleigh live in poverty, where the high school graduation rate is 83 percent in both counties.

By 2015, drug overdose deaths were the single largest cause of injury deaths in the US, it said.

Eighty-five percent of the increase in the premature death rate was due to deaths of people ages 15-44. Death trends from 1997 to 2014 showed 39 counties saw improvements while five worsened and the rest saw no change.

Kentucky was among four states with the highest age-adjusted overdose death rate in 2015, along with West Virginia, New Hampshire and OH, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In the latest rankings released Wednesday, Pike County ranked 88th of Ohio's 88 counties in health outcomes and length of life, while Ross County ranked 81st and 71st in those two areas, respectively.

In McDowell County, 43 percent of youth are "disconnected".

Julie Willems Van Dijk, Ph.D., R.N., director of the County Health Rankings & Roadmaps, said: "Young adults who are not in school or working represent untapped potential in our communities and our nation that we can't afford to waste".

Although the county moved up six places, there is still work that needs to be done to continue improving health across the board, he said.
