MLB Rumors: Retired Yankees Shortstop Derek Jeter Interested in Acquiring Marlins

All this comes after Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria expressed interest in selling the team late a year ago.

If Derek Jeter has his way, the Marlins will be talked about in the same breath as the Yankees for years. I wonder if that's the first time the pair have been mentioned in regards to the same story. This group involves a number of businessmen who have gained financial backing from Goldman Sachs (GS), which has one of the best investment banking franchises with a focus on sports.

According to a report by the Fox Business Network, there are three groups that are interested in buying the Marlins, and Jeter's group happens to be one of them.

Former New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter has expressed interest in bidding on the team, according to Gasparino and Schwartz, and veteran Wall Street executive Gregory Flemming is representing Jeter during the bidding. But a spokesperson for Romney says he was not involved.

According to Forbes' team evaluation, the Marlins are worth an estimated $675 million after factoring in operation cost and payroll. Jeter, who won five World Series championships with the Yankees during his career and has a seven-bedroom, nine-bathroom house in Tampa, Fla. In the end, the team is expected to go to the highest bidder.

Who knows? Perhaps with him in charge, he'll make changes that can coax the Marlins' fragile fan base out to that nice new stadium. "I think that what I said earlier, when spring started, is still true - there is potential for an offer to be accepted by Jeffrey (Loria), but I can't talk about the process".
