President Trump misses annual AIPAC conference

United States and Israeli officials said that Greenblatt made clear during the talks that the President wants Israel to slow settlement construction and doesn't want such activity to jeopardize efforts to restart the peace process.

Haley's remarks at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee's annual policy conference were interrupted several times by enthusiastic standing ovations from the thousands-strong crowd at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC.

Israeli ambassador to the US Ron Dermer speaks at the 2017 AIPAC conference. He also said that U.S. President Donald Trump is committed to Israel's defense.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence revived talk of the possibility the United States may move its embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv, saying President Donald Trump was seriously considering the matter.

"We're protesting [AIPAC] en masse as Jews to say that to be Jewish in America at this moment doesn't mean to support Israel unconditionally", said 25-year-old Yonah Lieberman, one of the co-founders of the anti-settlement group IfNotNow, which organized the rally.

Prime Minister Theresa May has laughed off suggestions that Britain might go to war over "the Rock". Britain claims three miles of sea around Gilbraltar but Spain says the waters are Spanish.

During a joint press conference with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in February, Trump did not emulate his predecessors by insisting on a two-state solution.

Meanwhile, Netanyahu had just announced new homes would be built. "This is our solemn promise to you, to Israel and to the world".

"Our policy has always been that we will prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons", he said. The resolution was a striking rupture with past practice by President Barack Obama who had the US abstain rather than veto the measure as president-elect Donald Trump demanded.

"The days of Israel bashing are over", US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley vowed on Monday. "Now, since its founding, the Israeli people have awed the world with their strength of will and their strength of character - and at all times in war and in peace, the Jewish people have held their heads high". The West, including Israel, wants a strong, consistent, moral US foreign policy based on shared values.

Greenblatt, Trump's longtime business attorney, will be an observer at the summit, but plans to use his visit to discuss the type of regional approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict Netanyahu and Trump have floated.
